Domenico Scarlatti, the Italian composer of the Baroque era, especially known for his clavier sonatas, created an extensive collection of 555 sonatas. Although it is difficult to determine the “most famous”, since the preferences are different, here are the three sonatas that are considered outstanding:

Sonata D Minor, K. 9 (L. 413) – “Pastoral”

Sonata D Minor is one of Scarlatti’s most famous works. It carries pastoral charm thanks to delicate, smooth melodies that cause a feeling of simplicity and elegance.

Sonata E Major, K. 380 (L. 23) – “Cortege”

Sonata Major is famous for his living and jubilant character. Playful melodies and an energetic pace make her beloved both among performers and among listeners.

Sonata C Major, K. 159 (L. 104) – “La Caccia” (“Hunting”)

Known as “La Caccia”, this sonata became famous for its living and playful character, which reflects the energy and dynamics of hunting. The music in it resembles the sounds of nature, the noise of the forest and the fun of hunting. It is full of life, speed and exciting melodies that create a feeling of adventure and fun. When listening to this sonata, you can imagine yourself as a participant in a real hunt and feel excitement and joy from this exciting lesson.

Scarlatti’s unique skill is how it creates a variety of musical images within the framework of a clavier form. Each of these compositions is, as it were, a miniature pearl that explores various emotional states and styles, which contributes to the enduring heritage of this great composer.
